Commentary of the verse “In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful” (1:1)

This phrase is a phrase of very great purity. God Almighty starts the Qur’an with this phrase of absolute purity, an intense purity verse. The attribute of purity is that it is able to encompass all things. Purity overcomes all things, while nothing overcomes purity. Perversity incorporates in its midst doubts, hesitations, and confusion. Hurl it against purity 1.000 times and it will be defeated and destroyed, 1.000 times out of 1.000. Perversity always calls to lowliness, the while purity always calls to endless heights, and loftiness. Men and women of purity possess majesty, causing people to fear, respect, love and admire them. The Qur’an celebrates the ideal of purity throughout the book. Purity is the virtue out of which all virtues decline. It is thanks to purity that one becomes able to walk the path of righteousness, and to exercise steadfastness in this endeavour.
